Choosing a Business Adviser Who Can Help You Put the Plan to Work

Advice is useful when your business can act on it. Ask how an adviser will understand your situation, work with your team and help turn decisions into lasting changes.

You leave the meeting clear about what needs to happen. Then you get back to the business. The operations lead is already stretched. A client needs an answer. The plan is still sound. But by the end of the week, very little has moved. That is what I want to understand before offering more advice.

Advice has to fit the work of implementation

A sound strategy can still sit unused when the business has no clear place for it to land. The sales handover has never been defined. The founder is still the person everyone waits for when an exception appears. Before the plan becomes another document, I want to know what will let it live in the work.

First: What relevant experience do you bring to a business at our stage, and how would you test whether it fits here? Experience can be useful when it helps an adviser see the right questions, not when it turns your business into a familiar answer.

Second: What is the implementation scope? Ask how the adviser will work with your team, what decisions or actions they will support, what remains with you and what the team should be able to run after the engagement.

Third: What are you noticing, and how would you test it with us before reaching a conclusion? A careful adviser can bring a point of view without pretending they already know the whole story.

Choose clarity, boundaries and capability

A strong adviser relationship should make decisions clearer without creating dependence. You should leave with clearer boundaries, a shared view of what happens next and more of the capability staying in the business.

At Two Icons Consulting, I use the OVERSIGHT methodology as my practical lens for looking at context, authority, leadership and the routines that help a change hold.
